Assessing the adoption of practices for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions amongst pastoral and agro-pastoral communities of Uganda

Start date
End date

This project aims at analyzing the adoption, economic viability, and effects of adopting greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction practices among livestock farmers. Literature review on climate-smart technologies and practices for using livestock waste to minimize GHG emission effects shows gaps in assessing the nexus between adoption and its determinants, financial, environmental, and social benefits for the farm as a whole. This research will fill this gap. The research will be conducted in 12 districts selected from the Ankole, Buganda, Karamoja, and Teso sub-regions of Uganda. Mixed methods will be used involving household surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The research informs issues raised in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, Conference of the Parties (COP) 27, and Uganda’s National Development Plan III 2020-2025 which aim to reduce environmental degradation and climate change impacts at scale. The findings will inform the development of policies and plans for integrating GHG management in government and private sector programs, and agricultural extension service delivery.
