This project has three main objectives:(i)to use state-level variation in the timing and severity of the lockdowns and the generosity of social transfer programs within India to understand how the current pandemic-related lockdown affected the spread of the pandemic and its economic costs among different sections of the population (ii)to study how communities use local institutions and collective action to adapt to the large scale economic disruptions that have been caused by the restrictions on economic activity and (iii) to examine the environmental impacts of the lockdowns and derive lessons for sustainable economic policies going forward.
