Empowering Households for Clean Energy: The Impact of Women Empowerment on usage of cleaner fuels in selected countries of Sub-Saharan Africa

Start date
End date

Access to clean energy sources remains low in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with only 18% of the population estimated to have access (World Bank, 2020).  This study aims to study the role of intra-household dynamics, particularly the influence of women's decision-making power, in the adoption of cleaner fuel sources. The research contributes to understanding how women's empowerment can contribute to the transition to clean energy use, promoting gender equality, reducing energy poverty, and enabling inclusive growth in access to clean energy sources. Using LSMS-ISA national household survey datasets from multiple SSA countries (Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda), we will conduct a cross-country comparison that will provide insights into the similarities and heterogeneity of effects across socioeconomic settings, countries, and regions, facilitating valuable insights for policy transfers and tailored interventions to increase clean fuel usage.
