Separability, spillovers and segmented markets: Evidence from dairy in India

Submitted by Fizza Suhel on

A long history of empirical research has focused on testing whether and when household consumption and production decisions are separable. The underlying premise is that if markets were perfect, household consumption would be independent of production. In this paper, we propose a novel explanation for the heterogeneity in the strength of correlation between production and consumption based on market channel choice.

Submitted by Fizza Suhel on
EfD Authors:

This study has assessed the impact of crop insurance vis-à-vis irrigation on farm income and its higher-order moments. Composite effects of human, natural and social capitals on sustainable food-crop farming in Sub-Saharan Africa

Submitted by Luat Do on
EfD Authors:

This study analyzes the spontaneous impact of human, social and natural capital on food crop technical efficiency (TE) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Our study contributes to the literature by adopting the meta-analysis method to investigate the relationship between TE and the three groups of capitals to better shed light on the TE in SSA regions. Our results highlight that social capital is the most critical factor among the three groups of capitals in promoting farming productivity.

Economic impacts of agricultural policy responses to the outbreak of COVID-19

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on

The aim of this article is to evaluate the general economic impact of the policies focused on the agricultural sector decreed by the Colombian government within the State of Economic, Social, and Ecological Emergency to mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on this sector. We use a computable general equilibrium model, calibrated with a social accounting matrix that was expanded to focus on specific crops and considered different sizes of agricultural production units.

Soil Conservation Practices and Neighborhood Effects – How Sustained are the relationships?

Submitted by Petra Hansson on

Key findings

Soil conservation activities (i.e., mixed cropping) in the south-south and northwest regions of the country in 2015 are influenced by a high prevalence of neighbours’ activities in 2012. Similarly, low prevalence of soil conservation activities in the middle belt of the country is correlated with similarly low activity levels of farmers’ neighbours in the preceding period.

Farmers with high (low) legumes cultivation in 2015 were surrounded by other farmers with similarly high (low) cultivation in 2012.
