The Economics Department at Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia, has three graduate programs. These programs are: The Master Program in Economics (PEG), the Master Program in Applied Economics (MECA), and the PhD in Economics.
Master Program in Economics (PEG- Programa de Economía para Graduados)
The Master Program in Economics (PEG) was founded in 1964 and is still an active program. Its main objective is the high-level formation of students in economic theory and the use of quantitative tools for the analysis of problems in developing economies.
The graduates will be able to elaborate independent research and participate in the decision-making process of institutions. Students take a set of theoretical and applied courses. To enhance the visibility of PEG, the Department of Economics launched the international summer school in 1997. It offers international elective courses and brings every June scholars from different prestigious Universities to teach short duration courses, such as Harvard, Oxford, New York, Penn State, Columbia, Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Maryland, California-Davis, Chicago, Duke and California Los Angeles, Torcuato Di Tella (Italy), Pompeu Fabra (Spain), Université de Montréal (Canada), University of Western Ontario (Canada), McGill University (Canada), University College London (England), Paris School of Economics, Universidad de Chile, Tilburg University (Holland). Besides these professors, professionals from institutions like the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Bank of France have also taught at the summer school.

This program was created on September 2015. Its main goal is to provide students the tools to perform advanced economic analysis and solve practical and empirical problems in the public and the private sector. In the first stage students learn how to manage big databases and learn micro-econometrics techniques. The program’s duration is one year and a half, in addition to a half year for those students from other disciplines that need to learn the basic economic tools.
The admissions are once a year. The three areas of emphasis of the program are (i) competition, economic regulation and economic development, (ii) analysis and evaluation of public policies, programs and investment projects, and (iii) environmental and natural resource economics.
This program is oriented towards professionals with economics and other undergraduate studies.
