Valuing a water recreation facility using semi parametric estimators in the travel cost method

The goal of this research is to estimate, using semi parametric (SNP) techniques, the recreational benefits related to one strategic ecosystem of high moors in Colombia. This technique was used during the travel cost method estimation process due to its flexibility. The chosen SNP technique corresponded to the Fourier flexible form, adjusting a Poisson model, such that the truncation and endogenous stratification biases in the data base could be taken into account.

Un modelo estructural consistente con la teoría de la utilidad se usó para derivar funciones de demanda de agua para uso residencial urbano en la ciudad de Manizales, Colombia. Características del hogar y la vivienda recolectadas en una encuesta, así como información de precio, ingreso, precipitación y una variable dummy para indicar si el mes correspondía a la fase cálida de El Niño,se incluyeron en la estimación econométrica de la demanda de agua para uso residencial urbano.

Despite work’s importance in most people’s overall sense of purpose in life, several studies measuring momentary well-being find that people are quite unhappy while at work. The study populations and the nature of work in these studies, however, are all similar: industrialized workers doing paid labor in the formal sector. What about the large fraction of humanity for whom “work” is primarily working on smallholder farms, tending cattle or collecting water or firewood?

Life Cycle Cost and Return on Investment as complementary decision variables for urban flood risk management in developing countries

Herein we investigate Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and Return on Investment (ROI) as potential decision variables for evaluating the economic performance (ROI) and financial feasibility (LCC) of a set of flood mitigation strategies over time. The main novelty of this work is the application of LCC and ROI analyses at the urban level to an asset portfolio of flood-prone buildings. Reduced flood damage is treated probabilistically as avoided costs (LCC analysis) and returns (ROI analysis), respectively.
