Collective Local Payments for Ecosystem Services: new local PES between groups, sanctions and prior watershed trust in Mexico

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

Payments for ecosystem services (PES) programs are now high in number, if not always in impact. When groups of users pay groups of service providers, establishing PES involves collective action. We study the creation of collective PES institutions, and their continuation, as group coordination. We use framed lab-in-field experiments with hydroservices users and providers within watersheds participating in Mexico's Matching Funds program in Veracruz, Yucatan and Quintana Roo states.

Does female economic empowerment promote development?

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

The persisting inequalities women face while entering the labor market, make female economic empowerment a major policy objective for international organisations, local governments, non-profit organisations, researchers, and private companies. However, female economic empowerment should not only tackle those inequalities itself but it is also considered a key element to end poverty and boost economic prosperity. The 17th PEGNet Policy Brief  examines this connection between female economic empowerment and development.

Using Biophysical Variables and Stand Density to Estimate Growth and Yield of Pinus patula in Antioquia, Colombia.

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

Timberland investment opportunities in Colombia are expected to increase as a result of the peace agreement recently signed between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. This new socio-political environment may facilitate the expansion of commercial forest plantations on a wider range of site conditions that are currently considered in existing biometric tools.

Recursos no renovables, diversificación y actividad económica en los departamentos de Colombia

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

Dynamics of power-transmission capacity expansion under regulated remuneration

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

Efficient provision of electricity requires timely expansions of power transmission capacity. However, regulation does not always send the right signals to generate the required (and timely) investments. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effect of alternative regulations on investment on transmission capacity. In this paper, considering regulated remuneration, we perform this evaluation with a behavioral simulation model of the transmission capacity expansion, in which capacity is endogenously determined by the demand/supply relation.

The Influence of the Strength of Financial Institutions and the Investment-Production Delay on Commodity Price Cycles: A Framed Field Experiment with Coffee Farmers in Colombia.

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

Commodity price cycles can arise when there is a tendency to invest more (less) when current prices are high (low). Traditionally this behavior is interpreted as based upon naïve expectations. However, weak financial institutions can also cause this behavior. When borrowing is hard and saving is risky farmers cannot invest

Climate impacts on hydropower in Colombia: A multi-model assessment of power sector adaptation pathways

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on 2 March 2020

Climate change is likely to affect water availability and therefore hydropower generation in many regions of the world. In drying regions, hydropower generation may be impaired, creating a need for new power investments that would otherwise have been unnecessary. In this study we apply two partial equilibrium models (GCAM and TIAM-ECN) and two general equilibrium models (MEG4C and Phoenix) to identify possible pathways of power sector adaptation for Colombia under climate change.
