Vision

Climate change has especially severe consequences for poor countries. However, because of growing energy demand, it is difficult for developing economies to refrain from fossil fuel investments. The goal of this program is to address the problems related to the implementation of carbon pricing in the Global South. The aim is to create a global community for research and engagement with policy makers, to ensure widespread capacity for producing appropriate analyses and designing effective policies that are politically viable.

Areas of Contribution

The program was developed in collaboration with the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC). The MCC has several ongoing projects that will be important for the future of the program:

  • Resource mobilization for sustainable development in Indonesia.
  • De-carbonizing economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Mitigation Policies in a Globalized and Developing World: The Role of Structural Change and Distributional Effects (ROCAHDE).
  • The Political Economy of a Global Coal Phase Out (PEGASOS).

The cases of Colombia, China, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica are also examples of the work involved in helping societies go through the process of implementing carbon pricing.
