Due to the increasing speed and impacts of climate change, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and countries around the world are calling for active participation from all sectors in helping to resolve global environmental problems. The shipping industry, which plays a leading role in world commerce by transporting 90% of goods globally, has the potential to contribute significantly in the battle to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

PurposeThe research objective is to explore consumers' (those of ethnic origin and non-ethnic origin) motivation for choosing ethnic food.Design/methodology/approachA total of 120 respondents were approached at Padang restaurants in Jakarta, and personal interviews were conducted using soft laddering techniques linking to means-end chain (MEC) analysis.

This study highlights the importance of a well-functioning bank sector to achieve the investment in renewable energy needed to meet future energy demand and simultaneously decrease CO2 emissions.

•  Small-scale fisheries play a double role in fishing households: household consumption and income generation.

•  Livelihood diversification, including fishing for a variety of species and income-earning activities by household members in addition to the head of household, is key for diversifying risk and allowing households to meet their consumption needs year-round.
