Impact of soil and water conservation technology adoption on smallholder farms in South-Western Uganda
For countries where the agricultural sector supports a majority of the population as in Uganda, the link between poverty and land degradation is of great significance. Soil and water conservation technologies are a recommended means of reducing degradation rates. However, ex-ante and ex-post analyses of the impact of these technologies remain few.
Imported inputs and exporting in the Africa’s manufacturing sector
The purpose of this paper is to estimate both direct and indirect channels through which imported inputs spur exporting in the African manufacturing sector.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors estimated models for all exporters, direct exporters and indirect exporters using a probit model. The authors circumvented the endogeneity of imported inputs and productivity in the export status models by using their lagged values. The authors employed the World Bank Enterprise Survey data for a set of 26 African countries.
Innovation and employment growth: evidence from manufacturing firms in Africa
This paper estimates the association between innovation and employment growth among manufacturing firms in Africa. The paper uses a cross-sectional World Bank Enterprise Survey dataset in which innovation is categorised as product innovation and process innovation. Results from the pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation are more efficient compared to IV 2SLS.
Budget deficit and inflation nexus in Uganda 1980–2016: a cointegration and error correction modeling approach
One of the principal goals of monetary policy pursued by Central Banks worldwide is virtually price stability. Understanding inflationary dispositions and its determinants is therefore a critical issue from the monetary authorities, scholars and the policy makers viewpoint. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the budget deficit and inflation nexus for Uganda for the period 1980–2016. This is because budget deficit in Uganda has been one of the top topical issues of concern in the country’s historical economic problems.
Impact of extreme climate events on poverty in Nigeria: a case of the 2012 flood
This study analysed the impact of the 2012 flood that occurred in Nigeria on households’ chance of entering into poverty, using a panel analysis of covariance model and data from the Nigerian General Household Survey of 2011 and 2013. The result of the analyses showed that though the 2012 flood did not significantly affect the per capita expenditure of all the surveyed households, it may have significantly decreased the per capita expenditure of households located in the flood affected areas and were heavily dependent on agriculture for their income.
