Ethiopia held a national consultative workshop on April 11-12, 2022 to prepare for the upcoming United Nations Stockholm+50 conference. The workshop aimed to showcase Ethiopia’s stride, in the past 50 years, in integrating the environment into its development agenda; identifying challenges and opportunities; reaching out to partners, and expanding partnerships to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs.
The two-day event highlighted major milestones which include an annual deforestation rate reduction from 92,000 ha to 33,000 ha. It was also noted that Ethiopia has invested more than 12 billion USD to combat the impact of climate change in the last ten years.
The Environment and Climate Research Center (ECRC) presented their experiences in research-policy interaction and highlighted the need to devise mechanisms to promote evidence-based policy-making processes to ensure that climate and environment issues are addressed.
The Stockholm+50 national consultations will be conducted in 58 countries between February and May 2022 with financial support from the Government of Sweden and with the facilitation of UNDP & UNEP. Ethiopia is one of the 58 countries selected for the national consultation.
