Land and forest tenure reforms workshop in Ethiopia, February 21-22, 2011

Event Information

Date:
Monday 21 February — Tuesday 22 February, 2011

Land reforms have played a central role in the political economy of many countries in the world and have been subject to massive disagreements between different political interest groups and ideologies. EfD funded project aims to draw lessons from land reforms in several African and Asian countries. The findings will be presented in a book edited by Professors Stein Holden and Keijiro Otsuko, entitled Land Tenure Reforms: Impacts on Poverty and Natural Resource Management. What Can We Learn?

The main objective of the book is to identify the impacts and draw lessons from land reforms in many countries both in terms of their internal and external validity. It focuses on a range of impacts including welfare and natural resource management impacts. Countries and types of reforms are selected to provide a basis for interesting comparative analyses. This should facilitate examination of the external validity of different types of reforms and consequences of scaling up.

Potential contributors were invited to participate in two workshops. The first workshop took place in the last week of January 2010 at Peking University and the second one was conducted at Debre Zeit, Kuriftu, in Ethiopia on February 21-22, 2011.

EfD Ethiopia coordinator, Dr. Alemu Mekonnen, presented a paper on Impact of land certification on tree growing on private plots of rural households in Ethiopia and EfD Ethiopia international associate, Dr. Mintewab Bezabih, presented a paper on The Role of Land Certification in Dissipating Gender Gaps on Productivity in Rural Ethiopia.
