EfD was well represented during EAERE21, 2015, in Helsinki Finland, last week. Our researchers participated in a wide range of sessions. One of the EfD organized sessions was the Thematic Policy Session on Energy and development: The role of clean cook stoves organized by Marc Jeuland (Duke), Gunnar Köhlin (University of Gothenburg).
The session was well frequented and there were many good discussions. In his introduction of the session, Subhrendu Pattanayak put the session in the context of a launch of a global research program. Clean energy technologies have the potential to deliver a variety of benefits to low-income rural households, including time and fuel savings, reduced health risks, and improvements in local environmental quality. They may also produce positive regional and global environmental externalities, lessening the pressure on forests and mitigating against climate change. Nonetheless, such technologies have run into important translation challenges that relate to both demand and supply-side factors. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the purported impacts of household energy choices. The session featured three recent papers that use experimental designs and longitudinal data analysis to shed light on household and institutional barriers to adoption, and impacts of clean stoves.
