EfD develops research agenda for a low-carbon transition in the Global South

While the world leaders are gathering in Glasgow to determine the political contributions to solve the climate crisis, the international research community is also ready to do its part. EfD has been selected by the IDRC to develop an actionable research agenda for low-carbon transitions for the Global South.

The International Development Research Centre, IDRC, based in Canada, has commissioned EfD to develop an actionable, inclusive research agenda with a gender focus that will support an efficient low-carbon transition in low- and middle-income countries.

“Important project”

This project, with a 1.2 million CAD budget, was launched in October this year, will run for 18 months, and will involve most EfD centers, five collaborative programs, and partners such as WRI, IIED, MCC, and Duke University.

“This is a very important and timely project, and we are proud to have been selected for this by the IDRC,” says EfD’s Director Gunnar Köhlin.

“Low-carbon transitions of the economies in the Global South will be very knowledge-intensive, and many of the solutions are still not identified. Involving EfD researchers in the Global South is definitely the way to go”.

“Unique opportunity”

The research agenda will map the most crucial knowledge gaps based on national policy reviews. It will identify the potential of different policy instruments and climate investment models, specify research needs for sectors that are crucial for the transition such as energy, infrastructure, and land use, and much more. A gender perspective will be mainstreamed into all analyzes.

“Now that many countries are setting targets for a carbon-neutral future, we have a unique opportunity to help them take ambitious climate action in the most efficient way,” says Gunnar Köhlin.
