A series of academic seminars were conducted on January 28, February 7 and February 17, 2014 at Eshetu Cholle Hall of the AAU. The seminars were organized by EEPFE and AAU.
The first seminar, which was held on January 28, was basically a video presentation on Global Food Policy and Food, which was made by a top expert of the World Bank at Stanford University, USA. The video sharing was aimed at sharing experiences on global food security situations focusing on Africa. Participants of the seminar include from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED), Trade and Industry, AAU, EEPFE and others. After listening to the video presentation, the participants of the seminar conducted discussion on the current situation of global food security as well as the Ethiopian context.
Dr. William Burke (a professor from Stanford University) and Dr. Tadele Ferede (Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University and Deputy Center Director and Senior Research Fellow of EEPFE) facilitated the discussion. In the discussion, it was concluded that there are several lessons that Ethiopia could learn from other African countries.
The other seminars were conducted on February 7 and February 17, 2014 in the same place. The presentations were entitled as “The centrality of manufacturing for sustained growth of economies with low per capita income” and “In search of structural change and perpetual growth in Ethiopia: Examining alternative sectoral growth drivers for reaching middle income country status” by Mr. Atlaw Alemu and Dr. Zerayehu Sime respectively, both from AAU. Dr. Tadele Ferede, EEPFE’s Deputy Director and Senior Research Fellow, facilitated the seminars.
