TitleWhen incentives vanish: the uneven impact of the bonus removal on EV registrations in Sweden.

Abstract: Sweden has one of the highest shares of electric vehicles (EV) in the world and has been a leader in reducing emissions from the transport sector. However, the past two years have seen significant changes to Swedish climate policy in this sector. The reduction mandate has been reduced to 6%, and in November 2022, the bonus for electric vehicles was unexpectedly eliminated, effective immediately. The effects of this policy change on new EV registrations have been widely debated. Our study provides a detailed analysis of these impacts across different ownership categories, including company cars, privately owned vehicles, and leased vehicles. Using a unique dataset of daily listed prices from private leasing providers collected over two years, we show that the removal of the bonus led to a significant increase in EV leasing prices, making EVs the most expensive option across all vehicle categories. We also examine how this policy change influenced the registration of new EVs among private individuals, different weight classes of EVs, and various income groups.

Hope to see you there!
