Title: Subjective expectations and simulated risks of climate change: Evidence from wineries in Japan.

Abstract: Designing effective information policies requires a thorough understanding of the prior expectations held by the information recipients. This project investigates producers’ expectations regarding the risks posed by climate change. We conducted a survey of 214 grape wineries in Japan to assess their perceived risk of negative impacts on future grape production due to climate change. Specifically, the study focuses on concerns about the deterioration of black grape skin color between 2031 and 2050. Our survey elicited probability distributions that reflect respondents’ expectations and their confidence in these projections. We then compared each respondent’s expectations with risk estimates derived from a simulation study in agricultural meteorology. Using regression analysis, we examine under what circumstances and to whom the government should provide climate change risk information.
