Event Information
The 25th Global Conference on Environmental Taxation (GCET), organized by Stellenbosch University’s Business School, will be held on 18-20 September 2024 at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) in Stellenbosch, which is situated near Cape Town (South Africa). The GCET has been held every year since 2000 and is the leading global forum for interdisciplinary exchanges on the principles and practices of environmental taxation and other market-based instruments for addressing climate change, protecting the environment and promoting a just energy transition. The annual conferences provide an international and interdisciplinary setting to explore issues concerning the design and implementation of environmental taxes and opportunities for creating networks to explore various theoretical and practical issues. The 2024 edition, entitled “Towards a just energy transition - perspectives from the North and South" is to be held for the first time on the African continent. It provides an ideal global platform to foster participatory and inclusive climate change dialogue between the Global North and South, especially at a time when, as the IPCC 2022 report notes, “humanity is at a crossroads”. The use of environmental taxation and other market-based instruments is critical in achieving a just energy transition, particularly in development contexts. Keynote Speakers
Kreiser Award for Environmental Taxation The Kreiser Award is an honor granted annually to a person who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of environmental taxation and other economic instruments in research or policy. Several scholars have received it, including economists participating in EAERE activities, e.g. Frank Convery, past EAERE President, Paris 2023; Aldo Ravazzi Douvan, EAERE POC member, Parma 2022; Paul Ekins, Ucl, Limassol 2020. Young Researcher Award for Environmental Taxation One of the key objectives of GCET is the promotion of junior contributions and the fostering of state-of-the-art scientific research. Accordingly, any student or researcher younger than age 35 (as at 1 April 2024) can be a candidate for the “GCET25 Young Researcher Award” if their abstract was accepted.
