Prof. Bbaale Brief Resume
Professor Edward Bbaale is a distinguished academic with a PhD in Economics, an M.A. in Economic Policy and Planning, and a B.A. in Economics. He currently serves as the Principal of the College of Business and Management Sciences at Makerere University and is the Director of the EfD-Mak Centre, part of the global network of Environmental Economics Research Centres supported by Sida. He has held various leadership roles at Makerere, including Director of the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training (2022-2024) and Dean of the School of Economics (2015-2022).
Professor Bbaale plays a pivotal role in several international and national initiatives. He is the Lead Person for the Inclusive Green Economy (IGE) Capacity Development Program for Senior Civil Servants and Policy Makers at Makerere, with support from Sida. Additionally, he coordinates the University Network for Strengthening Macrofinancial Resilience to Climate and Environmental Change. Under the World Bank and Government of Uganda's support, he is the Principal Investigator and Director of the Public Investment Management Centre of Excellence (PIM CoE) at Makerere University.
His research expertise is enriched by global exposure. He was awarded a postdoctoral scholarship by the Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education & Research (OeAD-GmbH) for research at the Vienna Institute of International Economic Studies (wiiw). He has also been a Visiting Fellow at institutions such as the Journal of African Economies at Oxford University, UK, and the Centre for Global Development in Washington, D.C.
Professor Bbaale has also contributed to institutional governance and national policy development. He was Chairperson of the Governing Council of Kampala Polytechnic-Mengo (2019) and a member of the University Council at Muteesa I Royal University (2021). He served on Uganda's National Task Force on Labour Productivity Enhancement and has been an External Examiner at various universities across Africa. He sat on Makerere University's Senate and served on key committees such as the Admissions Committee.
In the realm of policy research, he has led impactful national projects such as the Mid-term Review of Uganda's National Development Plan III and the End Term Evaluation of NDP II. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed papers, two of which won Highly Commended Awards at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence in 2012 and 2019.
Professor Bbaale served as a member of the African Economic Research Consortium Academic Advisory Board from 2015 to 2023 and as Vice Chairperson of the Makerere University Deans' Forum. He is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Young Economists Network.
