Research assistant in environmental economics and international projects

The Environment for Development (EfD) is a unit at the School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg. EfD is a global network of environmental economics research centers primarily based in the Global South. The overall objective of EfD is to support poverty alleviation and sustainable development by building environmental economics’ capacity for policy-making processes. EfD has centers hosted by academic institutions in Central America, Chile, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. EfD was launched in 2007 by the Environmental Economics Unit at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. EfD continues to work in close partnership with the Department of Economics, which has around 100 employees and 800 students. The collaboration is particularly strong with the research groups in environmental, behavioral and development economics.

At EfD in Gothenburg, various environmental economic research projects are conducted. For the FORMAS and FRAM (www.fram.gu.se) funded projects "Incentivize - Improved use of information and taxes to phase out hazardous chemicals in consumer products" and “Recycled plastics - weeding out the toxic chemicals”, we are hiring a research assistant. The latter project covers several countries in Africa.

 

Job assignments 

As a research assistant, you will work with literature searches, systematic reviews, design of surveys, coding and analysis of survey data, writing draft texts for reports and articles, administration and arranging workshops with various stakeholders. You will work closely with the research leader and with other researchers in various projects and countries.

  

Qualifications 

The successful applicant should meet the following requirements:

  • A master degree
  • Excellent knowledge of English as a working language, both written and oral.
  • Good knowledge of database management and statistical analysis
  • Good analytical skills, documented in written project / degree project and / or in publications in scientific journals.

Emphasis is also placed on the ability to collaborate with colleagues and external partners and to be able to take own initiatives, organize and work independently.

Merits that are taken into account are:

  • A master's degree in economics with a focus on environmental economics
  • Previous experience as a research assistant
  • Accustomed to working in Stata and R
  • Experience from survey based investigations, including choice experiments
  • Knowledge of chemical-related problems and instruments
  • Good knowledge of Swedish, both written and oral
  • Experience of and good ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment
  • Knowledge of languages ​​other than English that are relevant to EfD (i.e. the languages ​​used in EfD countries)

Employment 

The employment is a temporary position of one year with an extent of 100% of full time, with placement at Environment for Development (EfD), the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg in Gothenburg, Sweden. The starting date is as soon as possible.
