Identifying livelihoods, food security and sustainability of fisheries managed by local communities on marine protected areas in the Colombian Caribbean

Start date

Artisanal fishing in developing countries usually lacks statistics that allow proper research and understanding about livelihoods and fishing models; that makes it difficult to propose alternative solutions to fisheries management. Colombia has numerous artisanal fishing communities along its two coasts (Caribbean and Pacific) and, even though these communities depend heavily on use of natural resources as a source of income and food security, information about their patterns of extraction, livelihoods and sustainability in the use of fisheries is scarce. In this research we will recollect additional statistical information from fishing and non-fishing households, which together with a previously collected dataset, will help us investigate how fishing activities affect livelihood decisions and strategies, as well as food security of local communities living in coastal areas.
