The project analyzes the determinants of household tree planting. More specifically, the objectives of the project are twofold: first, we investigate the determinants of household’s decision to plant trees and the extent of tree growing in an econometrically consistent framework; Second, to identify the most important attributes/purposes for which households grow trees on species by species basis. Key questions are: what factor(s) enhance the likelihood of involvement in tree planting? Do the same factors underlie the two aspects of household tree planting, i.e., the decision to plant trees and the extent of tree growing? What are the most important attributes/purposes for which households grow trees?
The research project will be using a unique data set covering cross-section of 200 households in twenty four districts of Tigrai. Theoretical model will be specified; appropriate empirical framework/strategy will be specified and estimated;. Results will be presented, interpreted and discussed; and conclusions and implications will be drawn.
