Addressing Environmental Quality Inequities. The Role of Information and Collective Action.

Book Chapter

ABSTRACT

Globally, the impact of pollution on health, human development, and economic productivity is significant, disproportionately affecting economically disadvantaged individuals and people of color. This review delves into the importance of information in addressing such disparities, arguing that complete awareness of the distribution and risks of pollution is essential for effective individual and collective responses. The review also explores the landscape of air pollution data, emphasizing advancements and global variations in coverage and accessibility. While this review covers diverse regions and contexts, it identifies a notable gap in environmental justice research in the Global South, where more data are needed to improve knowledge and advocacy efforts. The chapter underscores the emerging role of citizen science in enhancing pollution monitoring, especially in regions with constrained resources.
