Thomas Sterner, Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Gothenburg, has been elected as a visiting professor to the Collège de France, one of the world's most distinguished academic institutions. Sterner is elected 2015-2016 Professor of the Chair of Sustainable Development - Environment, Energy and Society.
"I am very excited: I think this will be a great gate-opener when it comes to evolving my contacts in France. The Collège has a lot of resources and can be very influential. This will enrich our research environment and our ability to obtain funding for large European research foundations,” says Thomas Sterner, Professor of Environmental Economics, School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg. Sterner is also Chair of the EfD Research Committee.
Among former holders of this professorship at the Collège de France is economist Nicholas Stern, author of the well-known Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change (2006).
The Collège de France is an institution for public higher research and education. Since the 16th century, it has had a two-fold mission, to be a forum for cutting-edge research and teaching. The Collège de France has 54 professors from all disciplines. Among these professors, Roger Guesnerie, who succeeded the influential economist Edmond Malinvaud, has just retired as the only economist in the Collège. He will be succeeded by Phillipe Aghion who will now move back to France.
”Speaking of an ongoing public debate on economics, the French newspaper L’Opinion reported recently that Aghion beat Thomas Piketty, author of the best-selling and much debated book Capital in the Twenty-First Century who was also aspiring to the post”, says Sterner.
