News media reported on EfD Policy Day Tanzania

Tanzanian newspapers Raia Tanzania and Raia Mwema reported from the EfD Policy Day held on the 22 October 2014 in Dar es Salaam. Ola Olsson, Professor of Development Economics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, was interviewed. The Minister of State in the Vice President's Office for Environment, Binillith Satano Mahenge was quoted, and so was Gunnar Köhlin, EfD Director.

The theme for EfD Policy Day 2014 was “From Gold Rush to Gas Gust:  Tanzania in Search for Better Way of Natural Gas Use for Sustainable Human Development”. The Environment for Development Tanzania (EfDT) arranged the conference on the 22 October 2014, at Golden Tulip Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The news article published in Raia Tanzania, 23 October 2014 - please see a pdf of the article below, reported on the EfD Policy Day opening. EfD Director Gunnar Köhlin, and Maria van Berlekom, Head of Development Cooperation Division, Swedish Embassy,Tanzania, were both quoted in this article about the Tanzania Government initiative to use gas for power generation as a way to save forests hence curbing climate change.

The objectives of the EfD Policy Day, which inaugurated the 8th EfD Annual Meeting, held 23-26 October 2014, were to increase knowledge sharing and dialogue between policy makers, practitioners and researchers; to present EfD research on selected themes and discuss its policy relevance in a Tanzanian context; and to inform the EfD research agenda about policy maker’s views on research needs, actions and challenges.

The discussions focused on the Political Economy of Natural Resource Exploitation, Propelling Green Industrialization through Natural Gas in Tanzania: The Policy Link, Methane Leakage from Natural Gas: What Do We Need to Know and How Can We Act? Also the discussions included topics titled 'Evidence-Based Research and Policy Review on Oil and Natural Gas Sector in Tanzania' and 'Managing Natural resources for Sustainable Growth and Human Development in Tanzania – The case of extractive industry'. Finally there was a panel discussions on the key actions to attain sustainable opportunities and challenges for sustainable natural gas use with national and local benefits for post 2015.
