"This very readable book on Forest Tenure Reform in Asia and Africa looks at different countries’ strategies to use tenure innovations to manage forest resources. An especially interesting contribution is the comparison of China’s privatization of forest rights to the community-based forestry management approach in other developing countries," says Peter Berck, Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Policy, S.J. Hall Professor of Forestry, University of California, Berkeley, USA.
The new book Forest Tenure Reform in Asia and Africa: Local Control for Improved Livelihoods, Forest Management, and Carbon Sequestration (EfD Series, Routledge RFF Press, November 2014) includes a number of synthesis chapters and also detailed case studies from the EfD countries China, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania as well as Nepal and Uganda.
Using specific examples and a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives, including quantitative and qualitative analytical methods, the book provides an authoritative and critical picture of local forest reforms in light of the key challenges humanity faces today.
"The book evaluates a variety of outcomes – livelihoods, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration potential – in these different settings. Based on extensive on-the-ground experience, the editors and authors demonstrate valuable insights into the important role of tenure reform in managing forest resources," says Peter Berck.
The book is edited by Elizabeth J. Z. Robinson, Professor of Environmental Economics at the School of Agriculture, Policy, and Development, University of Reading, UK, and Randall A. Bluffstone, Professor of economics at Portland State University (left). They presented the book at the EfD annual meeting in late October 2014 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Among the authors are also other EfD members: Mark Purdon, Jintao Xu, William F. Hyde, Alemu Mekonnen, Razack B. Lokina, Priscilla Cooke St. Claire, Dambala Gelo, Tekie Alemu, Berhanu Gebremedhin, Paul Guthiga, Wilfred Nyangena, Ogada, Lisa Westholm, Robin Biddulph, Ida Hellmark, Anders Ekbom, H. Jo Albers, and Razack B. Lokina
Series editors are Thomas Sterner and Gunnar Köhlin. The book is published by Routledge RFF Press in the Environment for Development Series.
