Two researchers from the Environment for Development (EfD) and Economy and Environment Partnership for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA) shared their expertise in a capacity-building workshop for local government officials in Dong Nai Province, one of Vietnam's leading industrialized provinces. The training program, hosted by UEH University, home to both EEPSEA and EfD-Vietnam, focused on green growth and sustainable development strategies.
The workshop welcomed 40 high-ranking officials, including deputy directors of various departments, district-level People's Committees vice chairpersons, and other key decision-makers from Dong Nai Province. The primary objective was to enhance leadership and management capabilities in sustainable development policy planning and implementation, particularly emphasizing green growth, innovation, and digital transformation.
Bridging research and policy through interactive learning
During the sessions, the researchers shared insights from the recent EfD report on Inclusive Low-Carbon Transitions for Sustainable Development in the Global South, covering crucial topics such as societal changes and inclusive development, gender dimensions in low-carbon transition, digital transformation and sustainable infrastructure development for a green economy, and economic resilience and adaptive governance.
The participating officials engaged in discussions and activities, exploring the practical applications of these concepts in their local context. The workshop also emphasized integrating gender equality and social inclusion in sustainable development planning.
Fostering continuous learning for sustainable governance
Mr. Dao Van Phuoc, Standing Committee Member and Head of the Provincial Organization Department, highlighted the essential nature of such knowledge-sharing initiatives for leadership development. He emphasized that continuous learning opportunities ensure officials stay current with the latest management approaches and scientific advancements.
Through their participation, the EfD researchers demonstrated how academic expertise can directly contribute to policy formulation and implementation at the local level. The workshop showcased the valuable bridge between research and policy-making, as officials gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical insights for developing sustainable communities through digital and green twin transitions to be aligned with regional economic development plans.
By facilitating these activities, UEH, EEPSEA and EfD Vietnam demonstrate their mission through continued commitment to support local leaders as they face complex challenges in sustainable development for their communities.
