EfD Ghana held a workshop titled Writing Winning Research Proposals and Policy Briefs to equip early-career researchers with skills for securing funding and effectively communicating research findings. The full day workshop also included accounting and procurement – skills critical for the seamless implementation of funded projects but often overlooked in traditional academic training.
Led by EfD Ghana Director Wisdom Akpalu and Communications Officer Vicentia Quartey, the workshop gathered over fifty participants, including graduate students, research officers, and grant managers. Attendees came primarily from EfD Ghana member institutions, including the University of Ghana, the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and Central University, highlighting EfD Ghana’s commitment to building research capacity across its network.
“EfD Ghana is dedicated to advancing research excellence among its members and fostering the growth of their students and mentees. This workshop embodies our mission to equip young researchers with essential tools to make a real-world impact,” said Wisdom Akpalu.
ISSER Accountant Karim Suglo and University of Ghana Procurement Officer Constance Kocke led sessions on managing financial and procurement demands in research, offering participants essential insights into the complexities of project funding and procurement. Attendees found these sessions highly valuable for their academic and research careers.
“The sessions were informative and met my needs as an emerging researcher. I especially valued the speakers' expertise,” said George Hughes from Central University’s Department of Economics.
"The grant and proposal writing session demystified the complexities of crafting a winning grant,” added Issah Musah Aziba from ISSER, University of Ghana. "I feel more confident to pursue funding opportunities."
Reginald Arthur-Mensah Jnr Maxine from the University of Ghana’s School of Public Health also shared, “The workshop refreshed key concepts and introduced new strategies. The sessions on policy briefs and grants management were especially impactful.”
Held on 28 October at the ISSER conference center at the University of Ghana, the workshop reflects EfD Ghana’s dedication to nurturing a generation of skilled researchers. By offering practical training in a supportive environment, EfD Ghana is empowering young academics who are well-prepared to make significant contributions to Ghana’s research landscape and beyond.
