Rico-Straffon, Jimena

Jimena Rico-Straffon is a Ph.D. Candidate in Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She holds a Master of Public Policy from Duke University and a B.A. in Economics from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). Prior to joining UCSB, she worked at the Bank of Mexico’s Economic Research Division where she conducted research on labor markets, inequality, monetary policy, and deforestation.

Research interest

Jimena’s research areas include environmental, development, and labor economics. She has estimated how logging rights, eco-certification, and protected areas affect forest outcomes in tropical countries using applied econometric techniques. She is currently studying how water scarcity affects urban households in developing countries.

Mentoring

She enjoys mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students both in Latin America and the United States. She has also served as an undergraduate committee member at ITAM.
