Plastic Ban and Plastic Waste Management: Perceptions, Preferences and Willingness to Pay by Residents of Lagos Nigeria

Start date
End date

This study will determine the perceptions and
preferences of the residents of the coastal state of Lagos
as regards banning of single-use plastics and their
willingness to pay (WTP) for plastic waste management.
The study area is Lagos State Nigeria. Three hundred
(300) households randomly selected from 30
enumeration areas in the State will be used for the study.
The study will determine the perception of the residents of the coastal city as regards banning of single use
plastics; estimate their willingness to volunteer in cleanup
of wastes in drainage channels before the initial rains
of the year; and estimate the preferences of Lagos
residents as regards different options and alternatives to
plastic ban and plastic waste management and their WTP
using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). The
preferences of the respondents as regards outright
banning, mixed approach or limited banning and
business as usual (no banning) will be determined.
Heckman sample selection model will be used to
estimate the determinants of the respondent’s
willingness to volunteer to clean-up drainage channels
before the onset of first rains and the number of
hours/days a respondent is willing to volunteer.
Conditional logit model and mixed model (multinomial and conditional logit models) will be used to analyze
the choices the respondents will make in the DCE. The
key output of this study is new information as regards
household’s perceptions and preferences for plastic use
and non-use and on plastic waste management in Nigeria
and their determinants.

The study is funded by National Geographic Society (NGS)
