Senior Researcher Jorge Bonilla participates in the discussions about air quality problems in Bogota and Medellin

On January 1st, 2020, the newspaper El Tiempo published an online column written by EfD Colombia Director and Senior Researcher Jorge Bonilla about the air quality problems in the two most important cities of Colombia, Bogotá and Medellin.

In this column Jorge Bonilla discusses about the challenges that Bogota has to deal with in order to manage the air quality problems in the city. Compared to Medellin, Bogota’s municipality has had difficulties implementing actions that reduce air pollution. In general terms those actions are related to political will, coordination among public institutions and implementation of national regulation. On February 14th, 2020, Jorge also participated in a panel at a discussion program in television (Zona Franca). The other participants in the panel were the environmental secretary of Bogota, the President of one association for cargo transport, and one representative from the guild of industrial firms in Colombia. In this panel they discussed about the role of cargo transportation as an important source of air pollutants, the management of air quality alarms in the city, the importance of coordination between Bogota and its nearest cities for the management of air quality alerts.
