Interview on the 5 years of the Paris Agreement in Colombia

On December 12th, 2020, newspaper El Tiempo published a foreground article about the 5 years of the Paris Agreement. The Colombian government signed this agreement in 2015.  Since then, the Colombian national government as well as regions and cities have included mitigation goals in their development plans. During these five years the Ministry of Mines and Energy organized the first auction oriented to renewable energy sources and the Congress enacted the law for electric mobility and the law for climate change management.

EfD Senior Research Fellow Jorge H. García was interviewed for this article. He commented that despite the new legislation, renewable energy sources still have a low presence in Colombia. Regarding the carbon tax, he mentioned that it is relatively low compared to the damages caused by CO2 emissions.

Deforestation and policy plans for expanding the production of fossil fuels also create difficulties for fulfilling the agreement in Colombia.
