New Project on Artisanal Fishery in Chile

The EfD center in Chile, Research Nucleus on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics – Universidad de Concepción, is currently developing a research project on the Artisanal Sardine and Anchovies fishery in Central Southern Chile for the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Regulatory Fisheries Authority in Chile).

The aim is to assess the impact that regulatory measures, but especially the collective quota assignment system called Artisanal Extractive Regime (RAE in its Spanish acronym), has had on conservation, efficiency and social conditions for the fishermen. The sardine and anchovies is the most important (in catch) remaining fisheries in Chile, but it is presently on decline. So, policy advice is urgently required.
