Tanzania policy makers and researchers descended into Morogoro town for two days of training and interaction on sustainable development

Environment for Development (EfD) Tanzania together with the Centre for Behavioral Studies (CBS) held a two-day (8th-9th September 2020) workshop for the purpose of policy interaction and training.

This two-day event took place at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro and was themed “Behaviour Centered Environmental Initiatives for Sustainable Development in Tanzania”. The aim was for knowledge sharing between policy makers and researchers in Tanzania and to provide toolkits that may help in realizing and sustaining the benefits of a lower middle income economy to all Tanzanians.

Day one consisted of a training workshop to policy makers on behavioral science and how this can be used during policy formulation. Day two, was a policy day on environment in general with a focus on the blue economy and accounting. The event brought together more than 50 senior officials and policy makers from government ministries as well representatives from non-governmental organisations, and research institutions.

The opening remark was given by Dr. Rashid Tamatamah, the Permanent Secretary, Fisheries, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries who noted that “I have been impressed by the theme that has been chosen for this workshop. It is a theme that has drawn my immediate attention because it touches on critical areas of the economy, within the United Republic of Tanzania, including some that fall within the mandate of the sector that I am currently serving is the fisheries sector. The theme is especially important now when Tanzania want to realize and sustain its middle-income status”.

His Honourable went on further to say that “The theme of this workshop fits well in sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially SDG14 which is about life under water and pledges to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development by 2030. Despite all these benefits coming from the oceans, however, the ecosystem is rapidly deteriorating mainly due to climate change; environmental degradation; over exploitation of resources and pollution. This call for innovative approaches and policies that ensures that environmental considerations are put in place and adhered to”.

The two-day event was officially closed by Dr. Fortunata Msoffe from the Ministry of Natural Resource and Tourism on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.
