Project coordinator for Green Economy Policy Development

The Environment for Development (EfD) is a unit at the School of Business, Economics, and Law at the University of Gothenburg. EfD is a global network of environmental economics research centers primarily based in the Global South. The overall objective of EfD is to support poverty alleviation and sustainable development by building environmental economics’ capacity for policy-making processes. EfD has centers hosted by academic institutions in Central America, Chile, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. EfD was launched in 2007 by the Environmental Economics Unit at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. EfD continues to work in close partnership with the Department of Economics, which has around 100 employees and 800 students. The collaboration is particularly strong with the research groups in environmental, behavioral, and development economics.

Job assignments

As EfD’s Green Economy Project Coordinator you will coordinate activities within the Inclusive GreenEconomy in Practice for Senior Civil Servants and Policymakers program. The main objective of the program is to strengthen country capacity for transformations to an inclusive green economy and in particular in the program countries Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. This will be achieved by increasing the capacity to apply economic instruments, conduct organizational change, and promote national systems for Inclusive Green Economy in these countries. The program is supported by Sida. You will be based at the EfD Global Hub, University of Gothenburg, and you will work with a team of international colleagues at Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development in Gothenburg and at EfD centers in the Global South.

The project coordinator will work closely together with the EfD policy engagement director and the policy engagement specialists in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. The coordinator will plan, manage, and deliver on a range of activities and meetings, both internal and external, as well as provide guidance, support, and backup for local partners in East Africa. This may include coordinating regional policy reviews and peer review activities. The coordinator will also be engaged in analytical work, including literature reviews and writing of reports. Other tasks may include organizing and facilitate events, meetings, and webinars, various communications tasks such as updating the website, support the development of strategic plans and partnerships, as well as relevant day-to-day administration and activity reporting.

Some travel may be required occasionally.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have the following qualifications:

A Master’s degree in social or environmental sciences that is relevant for the position, and/or equivalent professional experience.

Project management experience, at least 2 years. Emphasis is given to leadership skills, as well as administrative and managerial proficiency.

International experience from studies or work, preferably in the Global South.

Previous work experience (preferably in a coordinating role) in international organizations, governmental agencies, or academia.

Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.

Personal suitability is of critical importance for this role. A good problem-solver that can prioritize assignments and tasks, and deliver good quality. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues and partners in society outside of academia.

Merits

An active interest in environment and poverty alleviation in the Global South, particularly East Africa.

Experience from analytical work, including synthesizing scientific articles and governmental reports, and in writing reports and articles.

Relevant knowledge about green economy, policy instrument design, and social inclusion.

Previous experience of mentorship, preferably in a Global South context.

Previous experience in organizing meetings and workshops.

Experience in applying for and reporting on externally funded projects.

Fluency in written and spoken Swedish.

Employment

The employment is temporary employment during 1 year and 9 months with an extent of 100% of full time, located at Environment for Development at the University of Gothenburg. The starting date is as soon as possible.
