The Environment for Development (EfD) is a unit at the School of Business, Economics, and Law at the University of Gothenburg. EfD is a global network of environmental economics research centers primarily based in the Global South. The overall objective of EfD is to support poverty alleviation and sustainable development by building environmental economics’ capacity for policy-making processes. EfD has centers hosted by academic institutions in Central America, Chile, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. EfD was launched in 2007 by the Environmental Economics Unit at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. EfD continues to work in close partnership with the Department of Economics, which has around 100 employees and 800 students. The collaboration is particularly strong with the research groups in environmental, behavioral, and development economics.

Job assignments

Communication is a fundamental instrument to fulfill the mission of EfD. As EfD's communications officer, you will plan, design, disseminate, evaluate and manage EfD's information and communication efforts.

You will be part of the EfD Global Hub based at the University of Gothenburg. You will work closely with the unit's management, and colleagues at all EfD centers.

Tasks include:

  • Responsibility for EfD's long-term communications strategy and that the organization's overall communication efforts are carried out following it.
  • Responsibility for the development of internal communication channels within EfD (both within the EfD Global Hub and the network) including the choice of communication platforms for this purpose.
  • Development of strategic communications material aimed at different target groups such as decision-makers, researchers, partners, donors, and others to increase awareness of EfD's activities and give it greater impact.
  • Provide strategic communications support to EfD centers and programs.
  • Develop and sustain EfD's brand in accordance with the intentions of the EfD Board.
  • Produce content for EfD's website, social media, and other communication channels.

Other tasks include organizing events, meetings, and webinars, supporting the development of strategic partnerships, as well as general administration and activity reporting.

Qualifications

Basic requirements:

  • A Master's degree that is relevant to the position, for example within communications.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in the field of communications.
  • Work experience in strategic and operational communications, preferably within research/academia.
  • Extensive experience in project management, with a special focus on administrative skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language.

Merits:

  • Previous work experience in development assistance and an active interest in the environment and poverty reduction in the Global South.
  • Experience from communication work linked to policy impact.
  • Experience from working with scientific communication, preferably within academia or international organizations working with development assistance.
  • Experience from analytical work, including synthetization of scientific articles and reports.
  • Good knowledge of Swedish in writing and speaking.

Personal suitability is of importance for the appointment of employment. For the position, it is important with the ability to co-operate. You should be able to work independently as well as in a team.

Employment

The employment is a permanent position with an extent of 100 % of full time, located at Environment for Development. Starting date is as soon as possible, upon agreement.

The location of employment is Gothenburg and even if the university now works remotely, the applicant is expected, when restrictions ease, to be able to work on-site at the unit.

A trial appointment may apply for the position.
