      This seminar was held as part of the institutional collaboration between the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg and the World Bank Environment Department. Presenter was Dr Fernando Loayza, Senior specialist in Strategic Environmental Assessment at the World Bank and coordinator of the World Bank pilot program on Institutions Centered SEA.

              EfD Kenya presented research at international congress on biodiversity

              Dr. Paul Guthiga of EfD-Kenya recently attended and presented research at an international congress on biodiversity held in South Africa, BIOTA Africa Congress 2008. More than 350 policy-makers, scientists, land users and other stakeholders from 20 African countries, Brazil and Germany discussed solutions for the challenges to Africa’s basis for survival – biological diversity – at Stellenbosch, South Africa from September 29 to October 3.

                Francisco Alpizar invited to be a member of a Technical Advisory Committee for UNDP

                Francisco Alpizar has been invited to be a member of a Technical Advisory Committee in support of UNDP’s initiative exploring the Role of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Economic Growth and Equity for Latin America and Caribbean. The objective of this regional initiative is to prepare a report aimed at policy makers in the region, similar to the Stern Report or the Millenium Ecosystem Report. Preliminary results are expected in March 2009.

                  Eggert resident advisor at EfD Tanzania

                  "I am excited about being on site to contribute to this new EfD center. Tanzania is poor but possesses great potential, and is now experiencing rapid change. It is great if we can bring environmental economics into that process, and at the same time improve and establish research in this area at University of Dar es Salaam," says Hakan Eggert, Associate Professor at EEU, University of Gothenburg, when taking up his one -year assignment as resident at EfD Tanzania, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

                              How to make biodiversity conservation an asset outside of parks?

                              "Biodiversity conservation should take place inside and outside protected areas, if biodiversity targets are to be met. This will only succeed if appropriate social and economic incentives and disincentives are in place. A research programme involving several economists and conservation agencies in South Africa, is currently being designed", said Harry Biggs, of SANParks scientific services, providing context for a joint presentation with among others Edwin Muchapondwa, Coordinator of the EfD Center in South Africa, at the annual Biodiversity Planning Forum 2008.

Students from 17 countries are attending his course.

                                    Peter Parks, Professor at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, is here at the Environmental Economics Unit (EEU) to lecture in the advanced graduate course Natural Resource Economics. Parks is widely acclaimed as a professor and this is the tenth year he has been asked to come here to teach PhD students – this year 32 of them from 17 countries.

                                      Allen Blackman to EfD Central America

                                      Allen Blackman, senior research fellow at Resources for the Future (RFF), will spend one year at CATIE in Costa Rica. As resident advisor for the EfD Program for Central America, he will collaborate on research projects, help build links to RFF and academia in the US, and provide input on how to build a new center.

                                                    EfD Annual Meeting

                                                    The first annual meeting for EfD, Environment for Development initiative, took place November 5-9, 2007, in Cape Town. All research fellows from the EfD centers, as well as a number of collaborators, were invited. The program included presentations and discussions of EfD work in progress as well as interactions to develop next year’s research program.
