Call for 2011 Conference: Agricultural Research for Development - Scales & Diversity

Agricultural Research for Development is an annual multi/inter-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder conference on agriculture, livestock and forest research in an international development context.
On www.Agri4D.se you will find a program, some background information and information on how to register and submit abstracts as well as some brief presentation of the key note speakers. On the same web site you will also find the documentation of last year’s conference: Production and Carbon Dynamics in Africa.

Swedish research and development assistance exist in an international context and needs influence and ideas from outside; hence we invite prominent international scientist, science leaders, development practitioners, policy makers and other stake holders. As farming, not least in developing countries, is a multi/inter-disciplinary endeavor, science has to be. Accordingly, not only is forestry and livestock included in Agricultural Research; in this context it also encompasses everything from microbiology to macro-economy, putting local people, their livelihoods, land use and environments in focus.

Scales & Diversity, in a context of food security & sustainability, is the theme of the conference this year. These are pertinent and interrelated issues in the contemporary development, policy and scientific discourse(s). The theme encompasses everything from climate change and carbon sequestration on the global scale to opportunities and constraints for production on the local scale, large scale monoculture plantation to subsistence agriculture, forest conservation and local goat breeds as well as market accessibility, management, land tenure, REDD+ and local/national/regional/global/private/public/gendered power relations. Furthermore, the issues contain scientific and policy related controversies. We intend that the conference should be a forum for balanced and science based discussions on ways forward. And on how science can/could/should contribute to make this world a better one.

Organizers’ are the networks’ Agri4D (www.Agri4D.se) SIANI (www.SIANI.se), Focali(www.focali.se),Future Agriculture (www.slu.se/futureagriculture) and Future Forests (www.futureforests.se).
