Almost 100 researchers from lower- and middle-income countries received Sida, IDRC and EAERE-funded travel grants to participate in WCERE 2018. This vastly enriches the international scope of the congress program.
World congresses are most often dominated by participants from European and North American countries. This is something that the 6th World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists, taking place in Gothenburg, June 25-29th have the ambition to change.
‘With the generous support from Sida, this year´s congress will be a truly global one’, says EfD Director Gunnar Köhlin, who has been leading the work of selecting candidates to receive funding.
‘The travel grants committee received over four hundred applications for travel grants and thanks to Sida we will be able to offer travel funding to all applicants with accepted papers who are resident in lower- and middle-income countries’ says Köhlin.
In addition, the travel grants will ensure that the WCERE 2018 pre-congress events taking place from the 23rd to the 25th of June will be well-attended by participants from around the world. Twenty-two travel grants recipients from sixteen different countries will not only present papers but also attend the Women in Environmental Economics Workshop. Fifteen will attend the Spatial Analysis in Economics and the Environment Summer course and twenty-one will attend the Application of Experimental Methods in Climate Policy Summer Course. The remaining twenty-five travel grants recipients will attend and present their papers at the congress.
Over and above this, IDRC is also sponsoring 15 participants from Latin America through the regional environmental economics network LACEEP. In addition, EAERE has identified four exceptional participants to sponsor to the world congress.
‘On behalf of both EfD and the Local Organizating Committee of WCERE 2018, we would like to thank Sida, IDRC and EAERE for their generous commitment to assist researchers from the global south in participating in this year’s congress. The broader distribution of papers along with the increased focus on policy and thematic sessions is promising a very interesting and diverse program that will go a long way in promoting a greener global economy. I am looking forward to seeing so many participants from the Global South at the World Congress in Gothenburg, concludes Köhlin.
The 6th World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists will take place June 25-29 at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg.
